About
Vojnosanitetski pregled is a journal that has been published since 1944. It deals with medical issues, with a special emphasis on military and war medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.
About the Journal
Vojnosanitetski pregled (VSP) is a professional journal for physicians, dentists and pharmacists of the Serbian Armed Forces. The journal also publishes papers by authors from civilian health and academic institutions in Serbia and abroad. The journal’s publisher is the University of Defence of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia, and its editorial office is located in the building of the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade. The journal publishes original papers, short communications, general reviews, meta-analyses, current topics, case reports, comments, personal views, reviews of professional books and conferences, letters to the editor, and papers from the history of medicine. Manuscript preparation for VSP is conducted according to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).[1] When publishing papers in the journal, the principles of good scientific practice and good practice in scientific journalism are respected, which apply to all participants in the process of publishing scientific work: authors, reviewers, and the editors of the journal themselves.[1][2] Every received manuscript is checked using the CrossCheck system (iThenticate software) for possible (auto)plagiarism. The journal is indexed by the most well-known index databases of scientific journalism. The content of each issue is published in the journals Giornale di Medicine Militare and Revista de Medicina Militara, while reviews of original papers and excerpts from the content are published by the International Review of the Armed Forces Medical Services.
History
The first issue was published in September 1944, continuing the tradition of the Vojno-sanitetski glasnik published from 1930–1941. Articles in VSP were initially published only in Serbian with abstracts written in Serbian, English, Russian, and French, and later, the articles were in Serbian or English with abstracts in both languages. Since 1976, VSP has had an ISSN number 0042-8450.
Even though VSP had a significant place in domestic biomedical journalism from the beginning, its editors desired to gain international status. Pursuing that goal started in 2002 by expanding the Editorial Board, which included the most renowned names in Serbian medicine, as well as by increasing the circle of reviewers from various fields of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry while tightening the criteria for accepting papers. In 2005, an international editorial board was formed, and in 2008, the journal obtained its own website in Serbian and English. This, as well as constantly inviting authors to publish their papers in English in order to increase “visibility”, resulted in the inclusion of VSP in 2008 in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIe) monitoring system, the Web of Science citation database, as well as receiving the first impact factor. Since January 2011, VSP has published only papers in English, including an abstract in Serbian, and, since December of the same year, papers have been published electronically, before the printed issue, as Online first.[3] From January 1, 2012, the journal was edited electronically. This system supports all editing management activities, from creating a journal webpage, submitting manuscripts, monitoring the review process, managing administration, and keeping records, to making final editorial decisions and publishing the volumes on its website. It enables the integration of papers into the cross-referencing system (CrossRef/DOI) and the plagiarism prevention system (CrossCheck) using software to confirm the originality of scientific work and detect plagiarism. The editorial team, composed of editors, a language editor for Serbian and English, a technical editor, proofreaders, and data entry operators, prepares the manuscripts for publication in the journal. A detailed display of the development of VSP is given in the movie made in 2014 on the occasion of the journal’s 70th anniversary.[4]
Publishing frequency
VSP is published monthly (12 issues in one year), and it is the only medical journal in Serbia with such publication dynamics.
